Shool of International Education Exchange
Taiyuan University of Technology (TYUT) College of International Education Exchange is established in March, 2004, to advance the internationalization of TYUT higher education, and make TYUT go global. Our College is responsible for inviting, enrolling and teaching management of overseas students entitled with Chinese Government Scholarship for the Ministry of Education. Students from all over the world study Chinese language and culture, and get degrees of Bachelor, Master and Doctor of different various majors. Meanwhile, our College is also responsible for project report and management of cooperative education between TYUT and advanced foreign colleges. We organize Chinese-foreign exchange projects among universities, and create conditions and opportunities for TYUT students to study abroad and for a degree. We have set up overseas language test centers, which organize and manage such language tests as IELTS, TOEFL, GRE and HSK. We are also responsible for personnel selecting and daily management of 2 TYUT Confucius Institutes abroad.
In recent years, we have accommodated overseas students from over 60 countries and regions including Russia, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Cameroon, Mongolia, Benin, Kenya, Moldova, UK, US, France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Australia, Canada, Jamaica, Venezuela, Peru, Yemen, British Virgin Islands, Antigua and Barbuda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kiribati, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan.
The College of International Education Exchange now has 20 faculty and staff, including 19 full-time teachers, 3 professors and 2 associate professors, among whom 10 teachers have a doctorate and 1 is a PHD candidate. Presently, our cooperation project with Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) College of Education (Michigan, US) on international Chinese and English languages teaching offers an excellent platform for teacher education and training and opportunities for them to communicate and visit abroad. To meet the increasing demand for international Chinese language teachers both home and abroad, TYUT Major of International Education recruits full-time undergraduates in China as majors of International Chinese Language Education.
【International Chinese Education】
Targets: The Major focuses on three targets of bi-lingualism, cross-culture and dual-abilities. That is to cultivate talents having a good command of both Chinese and foreign languages (English and 2nd foreign languages), a sense of Chinese-foreign cross-cultural communication, and the abilities to teach non-native speakers Chinese language and carry forward Chinese culture. We are capable of carrying out activities involving international Chinese language education and Chinese-foreign cultural exchange, and enjoy the potential to conduct higher-level researches on international Chinese language teaching.
Requirements: Students of this major should have a comprehensive understanding of Chinese language and literature, Chinese culture, Chinese-foreign cultural exchange, and laws and regulations, be good at communication, have humanistic and social science accomplishments, professional ethics, sense of innovation and social responsibility, all-round development, and abilities to live and learn and adjust to social development.

School of Mineral Engineering
The School of Mineral Engineering features an integrated cultivation system of colliery talents, divided into 7 teaching Departments of Mining Engineering, Safety Science and Engineering, Underground Engineering, Geoscience and Engineering, Surveying and Mapping Science and Technology, Mineral Processing Engineering, and Colliery Mechanical and Electrical Technology, and two experimental centers of Mining and Geoscience. We have a Key Lab for In-situ Property Improvement Mining, Ministry of Education, Shanxi Institute of Mining Technology (SXIMT), Shanxi Green Mine Engineering Technology Center, and Shanxi Safety Engineering Technology Center. The School has 9 majors of bachelor’s degree, namely mining engineering (divided into directions of mining, colliery electrification, and colliery machinery), safety engineering, resource exploration engineering, geological engineering, exploration technology and engineering, surveying and mapping engineering, geographic information science, mineral process engineering, and urban underground space engineering. Among them, mining engineering, mineral process engineering, resource exploration engineering, and surveying and mapping engineering are brand majors of Shanxi Province, and safety engineering is a feature major of the Ministry of Education and one of the majors that first carry out the Excellent Engineers Training Plan. The School now has 195 faculty and staff, including 162 teachers, 14 party and administrative staff, and 19 instructional assistants. Among them, there is 1 double-employed academician, 2 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 1 Sanjin Scholar, and 2 specially-appointed professors of Shanxi 100 Talent Program, 31 professors, and 59 associate professors (including 22 doctoral supervisors and 91 master supervisors), 13 senior engineers, and 101 lecturers and engineers. There are 108 teachers with a doctorate. We now have 2 first-level-discipline programs for post-doctoral studies of mineral engineering and safety science and engineering, and 8 doctorate conferring programs of mining engineering, geotechnical engineering, mineral process engineering, mineral resource prospecting and exploration, engineering mechanics, safety science and engineering, underground engineering and colliery electromechanical engineering; 13 master’s degree conferring programs of mining engineering, safety science and engineering, mineral resource prospecting and exploration, engineering mechanics, geodetection and information technology, map cartography and geographic information engineering, mineral process engineering, geological engineering, geodesy and surveying engineering, photogrammetry and remote sensing, geotechnical engineering, underground construction, and colliery electromechanical engineering; and 3 Master of Engineering conferring programs of mineral engineering, geological engineering and safety engineering. The Mining Engineering is a key discipline in Shanxi and China. The Safety Science and Engineering, Mineral Prospecting and Exploration, and Mineral Process Engineering are key disciplines in Shanxi. Now we have over 600 registered doctorate and master degree candidates, over 1,100 candidates for master of engineering, and more than 3,400 undergraduates.
Our School, aiming at cultivating high-level professionals in technology, research and management, enjoys strong teaching and research abilities, and have up-to-date teaching and research facilities. We have undertaken over 30 international cooperation, National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and national key projects, over 100 provincial and ministerial projects, and more than 300 businesses-entrusted scientific research projects. We have the ability to offer comprehensive services in mineral resource exploration, mine design and technological development, mine safety, surveying and mapping and geographic information system (GIS) design, and mineral processing.
Targets: Graduates of this major are expected to have the basic knowledge of geology, applied geophysics, engineering geological survey and design, and CBM exploration and development, and be excellent engineering and technical talents of engineering investigation, design, construction and supervision, CBM exploration, evaluation, development and management, and teaching and scientific research in companies, research institutions and universities.
Requirements: Students should focus on the basic theories and knowledge of fundamental geology, applied geophysics, engineering geological survey and design, and CBM prospecting and development besides mathematics and mechanics necessary for geological engineering, and have the basic abilities of engineering exploration, foundation design, construction, management and CBM prospecting and development.

School of Hydraulic Science and Engineering
Water is a necessity of life for human beings. Water resources serve as basis for the surge of national economy. And water conservancy represents the lifeline of the survival of mankind and development of a country. The School of Hydraulic Science and Engineering is the cradle for senior management and technological talents of water conservancy. It is divided into 3 departments of Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering, Agricultural Water Conservancy and Irrigation Engineering, and Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering, and 1 Hydraulic Engineering Experimental Center. The School now has a postdoctoral research center for engineering discipline, a first-level-discipline doctorate deferring program of hydraulic engineering, a first-level-discipline master’s degree deferring program of hydraulic engineering (including such second-level disciplines as hydraulics and river dynamics, water conservancy and hydropower engineering, hydraulic structure, hydrology and water resources, and port, coast and offshore engineering). There are now 63 teachers and administrative staff in the School, including 10 professors, 18 associate professors, 3 senior lab technicians, among whom 37 have a doctorate and 18 master’s degree. Relied on our outstanding faculty and research outcomes for years, we have cultivated a great number of engineering and technological elites for the national economic construction. Over the past 3 years, the School has undertaken over 60 provincial, ministerial and national scientific projects, released more than 100 papers on national publications, and published 17 monographs. In recent years, the enrollment rate of senior students who take part in the postgraduate entrance examination is over 30%, and the employment rate more than 90%.
【Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering】
Targets: Graduates of this major are expected to be excellent engineering and technical talents that have the basic theories and knowledge of modern water resources and hydropower engineering, and be capable of survey, design, construction, management and scientific research of medium- and large-sized water conservancy and hydropower complexes and related hydraulic structures in government administrative and planning departments, water conservancy and hydropower engineering design and development departments, and scientific research departments.
Requirements: Students should know the basic theories and knowledge of mathematics, mechanics and architectural structures necessary for water conservancy and hydropower engineering, get the basic training of engineering design methods, construction management and scientific research methods, and have the basic abilities of hydropower engineering survey, planning, design, construction, scientific research and management.

School of Architecture and Civil Engineering
Time-honored School of Architecture and Civil Engineering dates back to as early as 1902 when its origin, Department of Civil Engineering of Western Academy of former Shanxi University was founded. The past century and more have witnessed its leapfrog progress in discipline building. The School now is home to 122 teaching staff including 87 full-time teachers，45 full and associate professors, 40 lectures, 14 doctoral supervisors, 39 master supervisors and 24 experimental staff.
The School comprises Departments of Architecture and Civil Engineering with three undergraduate majors, namely Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning and Civil Engineering, which consists of four specialized domains including Architecture Engineering, Road and Bridge Engineering, Geotechnical and Underground Engineering and Railway Engineering.
The institution has the right to grant bachelor’s degrees of architecture, urban and rural planning, landscape gardening and civil engineering as first-level disciplines, doctoral degrees of geotechnical engineering and structural engineering as second-level disciplines and bachelor’s degree of engineering on architecture and civil engineering. Post-doctoral research stations on civil engineering have been established. Its geotechnical engineering, structural engineering earthquake prevention and relief and protective engineering serve as key disciplines of Shanxi province.

School of Political Science and Law, founded in May of 2010, has 45 teaching staff composed of five full professors, 11 associate professors, 22 doctors(doctoral candidates included), 11 master supervisors, four visiting professors from home and abroad, two New Century Talents accredited by Ministry of Education, one Top Talent of Higher Education, two Young Academic Leaders, one New Century Academic and Technology Pioneer of “333”Program(a key national program to cultivate 30 internationally pioneering talents, 300 provincially pioneering talents and 3000 citywide pioneering talents), two “131”Program(a program to cultivate 1000 talents on innovation and entrepreneurship, 3000 academic leaders and 10000 professional elites) Pioneers in Shanxi province. The School of Economics and Management involves two major disciplines of Economics and Management. It currently has four departments, including the Department of Accounting, the Department of Economics and Trade, the Department of Business Administration and the Department of Management Science, and it includes seven undergraduate programs of Construction Management, Marketing, Logistics Management, Accounting, International Economics and Trade, Electronic Commerce and Energy Economics (the undergraduate programs of Marketing and Construction Management also enroll non-management major students of this university for a second bachelor degree). School of Electrical and Power Engineering
The predecessor of the School of Electrical and Power Engineering is the Department of Electrical Science of Western Learning House of the Shanxi Grand Academy which was established in 1918, and the Department of Electrical Engineering was established in 1931. In 1953, the Department of Electrical Engineering was set up when the Taiyuan Institute of Technology was founded independently, and in 1958, the Department of Electromechanical Science was established when the Shanxi Mining Institute was founded. In 1998, the School of Electrical and Power Engineering was merged from the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Department of the Thermal Engineering of the former Taiyuan University of Technology, and the Department of Electrical Engineering of the former Shanxi Mining Institute.
The School of Electrical and Power Engineering is an engineering school which focuses on energy and electrical science, and it consists of the Department of Electrical Engineering, the Department of Thermal Engineering, Basic Teaching Department of Electrical Engineering and Teaching and Experiment Center. The school now has 2 undergraduate programs of Electrical Engineering and Automation and Energy and Power Engineering. The Electrical Engineering and Automation is a brand profession of the Shanxi Province and has passed the professional certification of China Engineering Education, and the Energy and Power Engineering is a special profession of the Shanxi Province. The School now has “Teaching Demonstration Center of Energy and Electrical Experiment of Shanxi Province” and “Teaching Center of Energy and Electrical Simulation Experiment of the Shanxi Province”. It also has “Basic Demonstration Laboratory of Undergraduate Education of the Shanxi Province” as well as excellent resource sharing courses of electrical engineering and electrical technology of the Shanxi Province. The school has a first-class discipline of Electrical Engineering which offers doctoral degree and post-doctoral research programs, which covers 5 second-class disciplines of Electrical Machines and Apparatus, Power Electronics and Power Transmission, Power System and Automation, High Voltage and Insulation Technology and Theory and New Technology of Electrical Engineering, among these, the “Electrical Machines and Apparatus” is a key discipline of the Shanxi Province. The school also has one first-class discipline of Power Engineering and Engineering Thermo-physics which offers master degree and a second-class discipline of Advanced Energy Technologies and Control Engineering which offers doctor degree. The school has key laboratories of the Shanxi Province including the “Electrical Equipment of Coal Mines and Intelligent Control” and “the Operation and Control of the Electric System”, and one engineering laboratory of the Shanxi Province which is “Intelligent Electrical Apparatus Technology applied in Mines”. The school boasts a long history and a strong faculty team. The school now has about 100 staff members, including 67 teachers. Among these teachers, there are 39 professors and associate professors, 7 doctoral advisors, and more than 70% of teachers have doctor or master degrees. The school now has 3 technology innovation teams of the Shanxi Province, 1 excellent innovation team of universities in Shanxi Province. It has 15 published books (textbook), about 80 authorized patents for invention and software copyrights, about 500 published academic papers including about 120 papers which were recorded by SCI and EI. Cultivating Objectives: cultivating interdisciplinary high-level engineering and technological talents who work on the theory study, engineering design, system operation, electrical experiment, application development and engineering management in the field of electrical machines and apparatus, power electronics and power transmission, electrical system and automation, high voltage and insulation technology and coal mines automation.
Cultivating Requirements: this major specially focuses on the force electricity, with the combination of force electricity and weak electricity, the combination of electrical engineering and electronics, the combination of software and hardware, as well as the combination of system and control theory. School of Computer Science and Technology
The School of Computer Science and Technology has a strong faculty of teaching and research setting up with Dept. of Computer Science, Dept. of Computer Engineering, Experimental Technology Center and Dept. of Computer Basic Teaching. There are 126 teaching staff including 12 professors, 25 associate professors, 5 senior engineers and 6 doctorate supervisors. More than 98% of teachers have PhDs or master’s degrees. At present, there are 585 undergraduates and 320 or more students with PhDs and master’s degree .
The School of Computer Science and Technology has a PhD granting right of secondary discipline of Computer Application Technology, a station for post-doctoral research of first-level discipline of Computer Science and Technology, master’s degree granting rights of first-level discipline of Computer Science and Technology and Software Engineering, master’s degree granting rights in two fields of Computer Application Technology and Software Engineering, and master’s degree granting right of Computer Application Technology for college teacher. The Computer Application Technology is the key subject in Shanxi Province. The School has majors in Computer Science and Technology and Internet of Things Engineering. In 2004, Computer Science and Technology was named in the first branded majors of universities in Shanxi Province, listed in major construction points with characteristics of national colleges and universities in 2009, included in pilot majors of “training plan of outstanding engineers”approved by the Ministry of Education in 2010, passed professional certification of Chinese Engineering Education. In recent years, undergraduate majors are exploring and practicing international cooperation and two kinds of “customized” cultivating new models for enterprises, and has established dual degree (3+1) joint training student exchange program and cooperation training plan with many domestic famous IT companies. Internet of Things Engineering, approved by the Ministry of Education in 2010, is new undergraduate course related strategic emerging industries. Taiyuan university is the first approved to own Internet of Things Engineering as one of the five local colleges and universities across the country, and began to recruit students, and is now recruiting 286 students.
In recent years, the School of Computer Science and Technology has undertaken projects of national “863” high-tech, national natural science fund, national science and technology support plan, and more than 70 national key projects and provincial projects. ■ School of Foreign Languages
The School of Foreign Languages at Taiyuan University of Technology (TYUT) was established in May 2010, with its history dating back to the College of Arts and Sciences at TYUT. Currently under its administration are teaching and research units including the Department of Foreign Languages, College Foreign Languages Department, Foreign Languages and Literature Research Institute, and Foreign Languages Internet Education Center, as well as functional departments including the Dean’s Office, Teaching and Research Office, Student Affairs Office and College Communist Youth League Office etc. With nearly 5,000 square meters of office buildings and an equal size of foreign language teaching lab facilities, the College is well equipped with simultaneous interpreting labs, and quite a few modern network language learning centers and multimedia language labs. The College offers undergraduate programs in English, English & Japanese, and English & Russia. The English Program also enrolls students who would like to take English as a second bachelor’s degree program. Altogether, there are now 529 undergraduate students. Furthermore, the College is qualified to confer master's degrees in tier-1 disciplines of Foreign Language and Literature, and in Translation & Interpreting (MTI). It also offers master's programs in English, Japanese and Russian, with 83 graduates on campus at present.
The College of Foreign Languages boasts a dynamic cohort of teaching and research faculty who are knowledgeable and rigorous in academics, active and strong in research, and full of vigor and vitality, with their ranks and ages spanning a reasonable range. There are now 140 faculty and staff, including 7 full-time foreign teachers, 49 associate professors, 20 Ph.D holders and doctoral students, 16 master’s supervisors, 2 "Renowned Teachers" at the provincial level, 10 "Young and Middle-aged Cadre Teachers in Universities and College of Shanxi Province", and over 10 ad hoc famous experts and scholars from home and abroad. In recent years, many faculty members in the School have won the title of "Excellent Teachers" at university level or provincial level, and secured multiple awards in the "Shanxi Provincial Young Faculty Basic Skills Competition" and the Provincial Teaching Results Project.
Over the years, the Colleges has been committed to advancing teaching and research in tandem, generating good results. The course of College English has been named a provincial quality course, and the course of Basic English for Graduate Students has been rated as a provincial quality course for graduate teaching. The College has undertaken and participated in 4 national research projects, 5 College English teaching reform projects sponsored by Ministry of Education, and 12 research and teaching reform projects at provincial or ministerial level and above. More than 60 projects sponsored by the Ministry of Education, the Provincial Science and Technology Department and the Provincial Department of Education have been completed or well underway, of which a dozen have won such awards as "Provincial Social Science Research Outstanding Achievements" and "Shanxi Provincial Teaching Achievements". ■School of Environmental Science and Engineering
The College of Environmental Science and Engineering has under its administration Department of Environmental Engineering, Department of Water Supply & Drainage and Engineering, Department of Architectural Environment and Energy Application Engineering, the Experimental Center, and the Environmental Impact Assessment Center. The College offers undergraduate programs in Environmental Engineering, Water Supply & Drainage Science and Engineering, and Architectural Environment and Energy application Engineering. The Environmental Engineering Program was established in 1984 while the rest 2 dates back to 1958, making the College one of the earliest civil engineering colleges nationwide. The College is qualified to confer doctoral degrees in Environmental Engineering, master's degrees in tier-1 disciplines of Environmental Science and Engineering (namely Environmental Engineering, and Environmental Science), and master’s degrees in Municipal Engineering and in HVAC Engineering. It also boasts a post-doc station for the study of environmental science and technology. In particular, Environmental Engineering distinguishes itself as a key discipline and a signature major in universities and colleges of Shanxi Province, and Municipal Engineering is marked as special offering at the Shanxi Provincial Engineering Graduate Education Innovation Center. The College enjoys a strong 79-member staff team and a 67-member faculty (including 10 professors, 23 associate professors and 34 lecturers), 3 doctoral supervisors and 41 master’s supervisors. In addition, it boasts a dynamic student body of more than 1100 undergraduates, 200 master students and more than 20 doctoral students. Therefore, the College has put in place a full-fledged teaching and research system incorporating doctoral students, masters and undergraduates.
In recent years, faculty members at the College have taken advantage of their professional strength to carry out R & D projects in such fields as environmental pollution control, municipal utilities, renewable energy use and building energy conservation to serve the needs of national and provincial economic development. As a result, 5 major research teams have come to the fore, focusing on the 5 areas of water pollution control and conversion of pollutants into resources and energy, water environment and urban water supply security, analysis and control of air pollutants, HVAC new technology and renewable energy use, and environmental materials preparation and application. Apart from undertaking many NNSF projects, key projects with major national support, national environmental protection projects, the Sino-Japanese CDM Project and more than 100 provincial and ministerial level research projects, the College has also raised a host of innovative theoretical insights and created a batch of new technologies, with quite a few researches topping the country. Meanwhile, the College has cultivated a large number of senior engineering professionals and technical personnel with innovation awareness and research capabilities, making tremendous contributions to the national energy conservation and environmental protection as well as the local economic development.
■ Software College
Evolving from the College of Computer and Software at Taiyuan University of Technology (TYUT), the Software College at TYUT is fortressed by the strong faculty team and advantageous teaching and research facilities of the College of Computer Science and Technology at TYUT. It has the authority to confer doctoral degrees in tier-2 disciplines of Computer Application Technology, and master’s degrees in tier-1 disciplines of Computer Science and Technology and Software Engineering, and (engineering) master’s degrees in the fields of Computer Technology and Software Engineering. Its undergraduate program offerings date back to the Electronic Computer Program in 1958, turning into the Computer Software Program in 1994 which was then integrated with the Computer Applications Program to become the Computer Science and Technology Program in 1998. Finally, the Software Engineering Program came into existence and began enrolling students after being approved of Ministry of Education in 2004.
After several years of experiment and practice, the College has accumulated rich experience, improved the cultivation plan, forged a strong faculty team, and set up training bases in the training of software professionals, thus ensuring the quality of training. The College has made tremendous efforts in order to achieve the leapfrog development in the training of software personnel, as well as align better with the national needs of implementing industrial restructuring with priority given to developing information industry and taking the software industry as a new growth area in economic development. In particular, it has highlighted the software engineering practice and practicum, strengthened university-enterprise cooperation and adopted the new "3+1" and "2+1+1" models to cultivate students so as to meet the urgent needs for software professionals spurred by the development of software industry. The Software College at TYUT was founded in 2010, and enrolls Shanxi students in its Software Engineering Program. Based on the areas in serious shortage of IT talents and the College’s advantageous disciplines, the College offers programs with disparate concentrations in Software Design and Development, Embedded Software Technology, E-commerce, Network Engineering and Application, and Mobile Internet Development, etc., which fully serves the needs of students’ various academic and career pursuits. Currently, the Software Engineering Program offered by the Software College at TYUT houses 3968 undergraduates.
In echoing the policy requirements of Ministry of Education to deepen university-enterprise cooperation, TYUT joined hands with China Soft International Co., Ltd., Qingdao Software Park and other well-known domestic software enterprises in 2012 to forge strong cooperation, with each bringing their best to the table. Taking into consideration the industry's most cutting-edge technology and enterprises' most-up-to-date talent needs, the College has made innovative explorations in terms of the cultivation model, curriculum, teaching materials and practicum in software talent training. The new "3+1" and "2+1+1" models are adopted to cultivate professionals in international software engineering technology and management.
